Fast at-line characterization of solid organic waste: Comparing analytical performance of different compact near infrared spectroscopic systems with different measurement configurations

Fast characterization of solid organic waste using near infrared spectroscopy has been successfully developed in the last decade. However, its adoption biogas plants for monitoring feeding substrates remains limited due to lack applicability and high costs. Recent evolutions technology have given rise both more compact modular low-cost systems which could allow a larger scale deployment. The current study investigates relevance these new by evaluating four different Fourier transform near-infrared spectroscopic with compactness (laboratory, portable, micro spectrometer) but also measurement configurations (polarized light, at distance, contact). Though conventional laboratory spectrometer showed best performance on various biochemical parameters tested (carbohydrates, lipids, nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand, methane potential), provided very close results. Prediction potential was possible an independent validation set error only 91 NmL(CH4).gTS-1 compared 60 spectrometer. differences were shown result mainly from poorer spectral sampling; not instrument characteristics such as resolution. Regarding configurations, none evaluated allowed significant gain robustness. In particular, polarized light system better results when multi-scattered signal brings further evidence importance physical light-scattering properties success models built waste.
